Students will receive deep exposure to the science of climate and broader understanding of the complexities of climate change.</p><p>“Climate change is perhaps the defining global environmental, social and political issue of our time,” says Bradley Markle, an assistant professor of geological sciences and faculty fellow in the <a href="/instaar/" rel="nofollow">Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research</a>.“The climate system consists of the interactions between the atmosphere, the oceans, the land surface, the biosphere, the cryosphere and the energy the planet receives from the sun. The climate knows nothing of departments, or majors, or any of the other distinctions we impose upon studying the world. An interdisciplinary approach is not just advantageous, but essential, to understanding this system. Growing up, he spent summers exploring national parks and winters immersed in the stark beauty of Alaska.</p><p>Now, as a PhD student in the University of Colorado Boulder <a href="/geography/" rel="nofollow">Department of Geography</a>, he spends his days researching the world’s melting ice and participating in an innovative youth leadership forum alongside fellow climate activists from around the world.</p><p>They are part of the <a href="https://www.icimod.org/initiative/hindu-kush-himalaya-arctic-youth-leadership-forum/" rel="nofollow">Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) - Arctic Youth Leadership Forum</a>, an ambitious new initiative connecting young people from mountain and polar regions to amplify voices in the climate fight and search for new solutions.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-02/Ethan%20Carr%20snow.jpg?itok=dB4FkNuu" width="1500" height="2000" alt="Ethan Carr sitting in front of wall of snow"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">“Not everybody needs to be a scientist or a strict climate activist to have an impact. (Photo: Ethan Carr)</p> </span> </div></div><p><strong>From soldier to scientist</strong></p><p>“It’s been a long, kind of windy road to get to where I’m at today,” Carr says.</p><p>That road, it turns out, began at West Point.</p><p>Carr didn’t originally set out to become a climate researcher when he enrolled at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. But a mandatory earth-science course nicknamed “DIRT” sparked an interest he didn’t know he had.</p><p>“That was kind of the first time I realized that you can make a career out of studying and being in really cool environments while you do it,” he says.</p><p>After graduating in 2020 and serving as an infantry officer, Carr’s career was redirected by an injury, forcing him to reassess his path forward. Business school wasn’t appealing, but geography still was.</p><p>“I took a couple of pre-MBA courses and couldn’t have been more bored in those,” he recalls. “So I said, ‘I have this geography degree, I might as well try to make a career out of it.’”</p><p>That decision led him to Boulder, one of the country’s top hubs for cryosphere research. He moved to the area before even getting into grad school, taking a chance on himself that would soon pay dividends.</p><p>First came a master’s degree. Then he turned his attention to pursuing a PhD in geography with support from the <a href="https://cires.colorado.edu/" rel="nofollow">Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences</a> (CIRES).</p><p><strong>Climate leadership across continents</strong></p><p>Carr was recently named part of the inaugural class of youth champions in the HKH - Arctic Youth Leadership Forum, a yearlong fellowship launched by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Nepal. The forum brings together 12 young leaders from some of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions.</p><p>Carr first saw the application on LinkedIn and was intrigued not just by the opportunity, but by the forum’s emphasis on public education and policy.</p><p>“One thing I’ve realized in my scientific journey so far is you have a lot of scientists who are obviously very intelligent, but not everyone wants to engage in public education, especially on the policy side,” Carr says.</p><p>Coming from a military background, he was already used to thinking geopolitically, so he saw the forum as a way to merge science with diplomacy while making a real impact.</p><p>“Within our cohort, we represent nations that are some of the largest emitters, being the U.S., China, and India,” Carr explains. “But we also have representatives from some of the countries that are experiencing the effects of climate change firsthand.”</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-02/Ethan%20Carr%20West%20Point.JPG?itok=zcj1tN9l" width="1500" height="1875" alt="Ethan Carr in West Point cadet uniform"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span>While studying at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Ethan Carr took a mandatory earth-science course nicknamed “DIRT” that sparked an interest he didn’t know he had. (Photo: Ethan Carr)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>In the Arctic, Carr points to the rapid melting of the Greenland ice sheet, a reality threatening both biodiversity in the region and Indigenous fishing economies. Meanwhile, countries like Pakistan, Nepal, and India, home to thousands of Himalayan glaciers, are confronting retreating ice sheets that underpin their water security.</p><p>“We see a lot of similarities in how things are changing, but this collaboration shows the kind of differences in who’s being affected and the populations being affected more so,” he says.</p><p><strong>Data meet lived experience</strong></p><p>As part of his doctoral work, Carr studies glacial lake outburst floods in Greenland—events in which meltwater lakes suddenly burst through glaciers, often with destructive force. He relies on satellite data to track water levels, but he’s also learned to listen to what local people are witnessing on the ground.</p><p>“Local fishermen have been noticing trends where, after these drainage events, they see an increase in primary productivity in local fjords. That has a significant impact on fishing for the year,” he says.</p><p>“That’s not something I would have expected as a scientist just looking at satellite imagery.”</p><p>This experience is one among many that has shaped Carr’s belief in combining scientific knowledge and the lived experiences of those native to the regions being studied. It also helped reinforce his understanding of the importance of bringing more voices to the table.</p><p>“Our generation and the generation after us are going to be the ones that are inheriting the climate mess we’ve been given by former generations, so those voices need to be heard,” he says.</p><p>Speaking of his fellow members on the leadership forum, Carr adds, “These are people that are passionate and empowered youth that have good ideas.”</p><p><strong>A global generation</strong></p><p>Carr sees connection as a unique advantage in his generation’s ability to catalyze change in the climate arena.</p><p>“We’re the most globalized generation there has ever been. My parents couldn’t pick up the phone and directly communicate with someone living in Bangladesh or Bhutan. But we can do that and form genuine working relationships with somebody 12 hours across the globe and work on projects that connect our regions,” he says.</p><p>He says the ability to collaborate across borders and cultures is a crucial advantage in the fight against climate change.</p><p>But so is perspective.</p><p>In his conversations with peers in South Asia, Carr has come to appreciate just how immediate the crisis is elsewhere and why people closer to home might not be able to recognize the urgency.</p><p>“In the U.S., I think sometimes we can be kind of separate from understanding what’s really happening in the world. (Photo: Ethan Carr)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>“These are real impacts happening on that side of the world that we can be pretty ignorant to in the U.S., and it’s something I’ve become way more aware about after talking with folks from over there. They have a lot more urgency in their fight for climate solutions because they can’t afford to wait as long as other parts of the world can,” he adds.</p><p><strong>A message for future climate leaders</strong></p><p>When asked what he would say to those who feel overwhelmed by the negativity surrounding climate change, Carr doesn’t hesitate. He knows the scale of the crisis can feel suffocating, but he’s also quick to challenge the idea that only scientists belong in the fight.</p><p>“Not everybody needs to be a scientist or a strict climate activist to have an impact. Really, all you need is to have a voice and a passion for it,” he says.</p><p>Carr believes that the most effective climate solutions will come not just from labs or policy think tanks, but from every corner of society. In fact, he sees this diversity of thought as essential.</p><p>“We need climate-minded people in all professions, from business to economics, engineering, and especially journalism. The more we talk about it, the more awareness we can bring to the issue,” he says.</p><p>He also sees a need to reframe how climate change is discussed.</p><p>“The same rhetoric that’s been used the last few decades of, ‘This is bad because our planet is warming up, and we aren’t going to be able to live,’ hasn’t delivered. Changing how we discuss it to focus on what climate change will do in certain regions and how it will affect local people and economies, I think, is a better way to look at it,” Carr says.</p><p>More than anything, Carr encourages young people to speak up and get involved—even if they don’t have a degree or defined role yet.</p><p>“The world needs the youth to step up in these spaces. Don’t wait to be asked. Make a space for yourself and move into it. Below, the landscape doesn’t look like the same one she once hiked and skied. That’s exactly why she’s flying.</p><p>For Writer (<a href="/coloradan/class-notes/katie-writer" rel="nofollow">Geog’91</a>), flying offers a unique vantage point from which to witness the planet changing in real time.</p><p>“Climate change is something I saw coming all the way back in my days studying geography, and I knew it would be a big part of my life’s calling. I have a sense of duty as a photojournalist pilot and an advocate for the environment. At Boulder, she majored in geography and raced on the ski team, balancing course loads with weekend races. After graduating, she worked as an interpreter for the United States Olympic Committee at the 1992 Winter Olympics in France, and that lit a fire in her for world-class racing.</p><p>“I quickly moved up the ranks and placed 17th at the U.S. National Championships in 1994,” Writer recalls.</p><p>But when an injury derailed her career, she pivoted her skiing passion from racing to the page, becoming an aptly named writer of outdoor adventure articles for the likes of <em>Couloir</em>&nbsp;and <em>Powder</em> magazines. One story led her to Denali National Park.</p><p>“On that trip, I was inspired to become a pilot,” she says. “I’d also been on another ski trip where a Cessna 185 flew us into the wilderness in a ski plane, and it made me realize that these little planes give you some great access to the wilderness.”</p><p>After earning her pilot’s license with support from aviation scholarships, Writer settled in Alaska, where she has since filled her appetite for adventure and storytelling through the lens of her camera. She didn't give up competitive skiing entirely, though, and races in three <span>World Extreme Skiing competitions in Alaska</span></p><p>“Others were noticing my photography and really appreciating the bird’s eye view I was getting as an aerial photographer/pilot. It helped me realize that capturing these images was something I was really passionate about,” she says.</p><p><strong>Seeing the story from above</strong></p><p>When Writer takes her camera into the sky, the viewpoint of <a href="https://www.katiewritergallery.com/aerialphotographyAlaskaart" data-entity-type="external" rel="nofollow">Alaska’s stunning landscapes</a> brings awe, but also a sense of urgency. From her Super Cub, she observes patterns of change. Hillsides of dying spruce. Once thriving glaciers shrinking every year. Riverbanks collapsing after torrential storms. She has returned often to the same places, documenting changes that most people never get to see.</p><p>“There’s no doubt when you live in Alaska, you see the effects of the <a href="https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2020/october/pilot/witness-to-change" data-entity-type="external" rel="nofollow">beetle kill</a>. I realized this was an excellent way to present climate change with the visuals from an aerial perspective,” Writer says.</p><p>Warmer winters have allowed spruce beetles to survive year-round, leaving entire forests stained with rust-colored decay. (Photos: Katie Writer)</p> </span> <p>“We spent a lot of time going back to the toe of the Ruth glacier, photographing the specific area year after year and seeing how dramatically the receding lines were, as well as observing the collapsing walls,” she adds.</p><p>She also tracks what happens downstream. After record rainfall from an atmospheric river in August 2025, she flew over the swollen Talkeetna River and saw entire stretches of bank washed away.</p><p>“These weather events with high levels of moisture, in my opinion, are another visual acceleration of erosion.”</p><p>These scenes are part of a photographic timeline Writer has spent years assembling. With each flight, she adds a new layer to the growing visual archive that captures the rapid reshaping of Alaska’s wilderness. For those of us on the ground, it’s a rare glimpse at what our world looks like from above.</p><p><strong>Exploring a new medium</strong></p><p>In time, the stories Writer wanted to tell outgrew both print and pictures. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched the All Cooped Up Alaska Podcast, a show born from isolation and the desire to connect. (Photo: Katie Writer)&nbsp;</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>“The benefit of producing your own podcast is that you get to be as creative as you want and can tell the stories you want to tell,” she says. “A lot of the stories I used to create for our local radio station would be edited down to three and a half minutes for airtime. I was always a little bit frustrated by that.”</p><p>Now, Writer brings on regular guests, including prominent Alaskan climatologists Rick Thoman and Brian Brettschneider, to discuss everything from wildfire smoke to Arctic feedback loops. She also covers major events like the Arctic Encounter Symposium in Anchorage.</p><p>“Arctic Encounter is attended by world leaders from all around Arctic countries, including Indigenous leaders, policymakers, scientists, villagers and Arctic dwellers,” she says. “It’s a very inspiring event with fascinating panels of people talking about the problems they’re having and solutions they envision.”</p><p><span>Writer has also added a sightseeing&nbsp;business&nbsp;to Visionary Adventures, taking people out on Super Cub Airplane Rides so they can experience the beauty themselves. And these days, her children are her most frequent fliers: "We—my son, Jasper, and daughter, Wren—have also enjoyed soaring above the wilds looking for wild game and fishing spots."&nbsp;</span></p><p><strong> at altitude</strong></p><p>Looking back, Writer credits her time at Boulder with helping to shape her worldview.</p><p>“One of the primary things that made a major influence on choosing geography as a major was an upper-division course that was in the Arctic Circle, learning field research techniques,” she says.</p><p>She also recalls the atmosphere of both Boulder’s scientific community and cultural diversity.</p><p>“As a sophomore, our house was across the street from the Hari Krishnas, where we ate a meal a week and enjoyed philosophizing on life and world religions. It was just a really neat place to be,” Writer says. “All of the beautiful architecture and even the Guggenheim building for Geography really held a special place in my heart for a place of learning.”</p><p>Her advice for today’s students? Write often.</p><p>“Writing is a really important skill that I’m noticing more and more being lost with the use of AI. Getting the pen flowing onto a piece of paper lets you tap into a whole different type of creativity,” she says.</p><p>“Realize that you may not know what your whole career is going to be, but don’t be afraid to explore and take a risk in opportunities you might get. Cassano was 25 and a graduate student who had agreed to work on a project installing weather stations in Greenland and Antarctica. He figured he’d go once, check Antarctica off his list and move on with life. Thirty years later, he’s still going back.</p><p>Cassano did not plan to be a polar researcher. Growing up in New York, he imagined a career in architecture—something tangible, predictable. But a freshman weather class at Montana State University changed everything. “I decided architecture wasn’t for me.”</p><p>Meteorology seemed a better fit. Montana State didn’t offer meteorology, so Cassano earned an earth science degree and headed to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, intending to study storms. Then came an invitation from Charles Stearns, professor of <a href="/atoc/" data-entity-type="external" rel="nofollow">atmospheric and oceanic sciences</a>, asking if Cassano would be interested in working on a project in Antarctica.</p><p>“I had no real interest in the polar regions,” Cassano admits. “But I wasn’t going to pass up the chance to go to Antarctica once.”</p><p>That “once” became a career. After two field seasons with Stearns, Cassano pursued a PhD at the University of Wyoming, focusing on Antarctic meteorology. Today, as a professor in the University of Colorado Boulder’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, he has lived about a year in Antarctica over the course of 15 trips there.</p><p>Cassano is also lead scientist at the <a href="https://nsidc.org/home" rel="nofollow">National Snow and Ice Data Center</a> and a fellow at Boulder’s <a href="https://cires.colorado.edu/people/john-cassano" rel="nofollow">Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences</a>.</p><p><strong>'A weather weenie at heart'</strong></p><p>The science keeps him coming back. Cassano’s work explores how the atmosphere behaves in Earth’s most extreme environments—knowledge that underpins climate models and weather forecasts worldwide.</p><p>The adventure is also alluring. “I’m a weather weenie at heart,” he says. “I like experiencing extremes—strong winds, big snowstorms, really cold temperatures. In 2009, he led the first U.S.-funded drone research campaign in Antarctica, opening new ways to measure the atmosphere where traditional instruments fall short.</p><p>“Drones let us probe the boundary layer—the part of the atmosphere that exchanges heat and moisture with the surface,” he explains. “That’s critical for understanding climate.”</p><p>Earlier, as a postdoctoral researcher at Ohio State University, Cassano helped modernize Antarctic weather forecasting. The Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System, launched in 2001, transformed flight safety.</p><p>“When I started going down in the ’90s, forecasters were confident about eight hours out,” he says. “Now it’s five days. That’s huge.”</p><p>That’s a big change for several reasons, not the least of which is that an eight-hour forecast could change from the time a plane left Christchurch, New Zealand, and got closer to Antarctica. Planes often had to turn around mid-flight back then, Cassano recalls.</p><p><strong>Witnessing dramatic changes</strong></p><p>Cassano has witnessed dramatic changes in three decades of research.</p><p>Arctic sea ice has declined about 40 percent in recent decades. Antarctic sea ice, once at record highs, now hovers at record lows. Ice shelves are collapsing.</p><p>“These changes matter,” he says. “They alter the temperature gradient between the tropics and poles, which drives global weather. Even if you never go to the polar regions, it affects the storms you experience.”</p><p>Meanwhile, fieldwork isn’t all adventure. “Emotionally, it’s hard,” Cassano says. “When I was single, I didn’t mind being gone for months. Now, being away from my wife and daughter is tough.”</p><p>Comforts are few: shared dorm rooms, institutional food and the knowledge that if something happens at home, he can’t leave. “Once you’re there in August, you’re stuck until October.”</p><p>But Cassano treasures the Antarctic community—a self-selecting group of scientists and support staff who thrive in isolation. “You don’t wind up in Antarctica by mistake,” he says.</p><p>“Everyone wants to be there. Contractors work six-month stints and spend the rest of the year traveling. (Photo: John Cassano)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>He loves the stories: a mechanic who spent his off-season trekking through South America, a cook who had just returned from hiking in Nepal. “You hear all these amazing experiences,” Cassano says. “It’s like living inside a travel magazine.”</p><p>Behind every scientific breakthrough lies a vast support system. “I can focus on science because others make sure I have food, water, transportation and a warm place to sleep,” Cassano says. “That infrastructure is critical.”</p><p>Cassano worries about the cost of fieldwork and the ripple effects of recent disruptions. “Field projects are expensive,” he says. “COVID and a major McMurdo Station rebuild created a backlog. My project was supposed to be in the field in 2021—we went in 2025. NSF is still catching up.”</p><p>Federal priorities are a concern in the current political climate, but Cassano suggests that Antarctic research might be less vulnerable than other kinds of federally sponsored science.</p><p>“Antarctic research has always had a geopolitical dimension,” Cassano notes. “The Antarctic Treaty encourages nations to maintain scientific programs. It’s how you keep a seat at the table.”</p><p><strong>Constant curiosity</strong></p><p>For Cassano, mentoring is particularly rewarding. “I love bringing new people down,” he says. “Seeing Antarctica through their eyes makes me excited again.” On his latest trip, he watched a young researcher, Kara Hartig, CIRES visiting fellow postdoc, as she experienced the ice for the first time. “Her enthusiasm reminded me why I do this.”</p><p>That excitement ripples outward. After Cassano shared photos in class, a former student emailed, saying, “I’m on my way to Antarctica to work as a chef at McMurdo,” the largest research station on the continent.</p><p>“He just wanted to experience it,” Cassano says. “I think that’s awesome.”</p><p>Cassano’s curiosity remains undiminished. Now, visitors will find the hills dominated by sprawling new homes and residents of a different tax bracket.</p><p>“We were driving through, and it was all these multi-million-dollar homes. A lot of talk about this community having more dogs than people,” <a href="https://hazards.colorado.edu/biography/mary-angelica-painter" rel="nofollow">Mary Angelica Painter</a> recalls after a recent trip to the town. “It’s a very wealthy, affluent community.”</p><p>Painter, a research associate at <a href="https://hazards.colorado.edu/" rel="nofollow">the University of Colorado Boulder’s Natural Hazards Center</a>, knows the history of this town from the work of scholars in the hazards and disaster field. It was a place where lower-income, often elderly residents leaned on each other for care and social support. We saw one area where there was supposedly low-income housing, and we were told rent was ‘only’ $1,800 a month. I was like, ‘Wow.’ I had no other term to define it than hazard gentrification,” Painter says.</p><p>It’s a familiar pattern she has seen while studying natural hazards and the subsequent recovery efforts of the affected communities.</p><p>In an effort to better describe the trend, she recently <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40519562/" data-entity-type="external" rel="nofollow">co-authored a paper defining “hazard gentrification”</a> as the process that unfolds when natural hazards destroy a large portion of a community and residents are displaced by wealthier newcomers during recovery and rebuilding.</p><p>Unlike slower-moving forms of gentrification, such as those related to climate change, Painter says hazard gentrification is more rapid and has devastating repercussions.</p><p><strong>Defining a new kind of gentrification</strong></p><p>The term coined by Painter and her co-authors builds on years of disaster capitalism research—the idea that public and private entities exploit disasters to consolidate power and wealth.</p><p>“We often hear the term ‘build back better,’ which leads to the question of ‘build back better for whom?’” she says.</p><p>Sustainability gentrification, a similar but unique concept, has been coined recently as well. However, those takeovers tend to happen gradually.</p><p>“Hazard gentrification is much faster than other forms of sustainability gentrification,” Painter explains, “so that’s why we really felt the urge to write this short paper and punctuate this specific type of gentrification.”</p><p>She also warns that it isn’t a theoretical concern. From New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to the aftermath of wildfires in Lahaina, Hawaii, the pattern has played out repeatedly.</p><p>“We needed to name this phenomenon as its own thing so we can start identifying solutions,” Painter says.</p><p><strong>The forces at play</strong></p><p>So, what turns a disaster into a reality-altering event for a local community? Painter says the answer is political as much as environmental.</p><p>“Disasters stem from social, economic and political choices that leave people in devastation. So, in my mind, disasters are very political.”&nbsp;</p><p>After a natural hazard hits, local governments often face pressure to restore services quickly and begin the rebuilding efforts. The dynamic also benefits outside investors and developers who are eager to move in where disaster presents an opportunity.</p><p><strong>Who gets left behind</strong></p><p>For many long-time, even lifelong, residents, rebuilding after a hazard hits simply isn’t an option.</p><p>“These populations that are more socially vulnerable tend to either be underinsured or not insured at all against hazards and disasters. They might be living paycheck to paycheck and don’t have the extra income or time to find secondary housing,” Painter says.</p><p>“We actually know from research that white affluent people post natural hazard are actually better off after the disaster. They are able to get large insurance payouts, and if their house needs to be rebuilt or refurbished, the value can go up and they can sell it for a profit,” she adds.</p><p>Those benefits aren’t present for people who live in mobile homes or manufactured housing, let alone renters. Painter explains that rental assistance is often insubstantial, and renters do not receive the same high priority as homeowners.</p><p>The loss of social safety nets, both formal and informal, compounds the trauma for local residents who rely on them.</p><p>“They lose their networks of support. There are just so many factors that come together that make it slower or impossible for them to recover,” Painter says.</p><p>As a result, many residents find themselves priced out of the place they called home and are left to watch as the area is redeveloped without them.</p><p><strong>How some communities push back</strong></p><p>Despite the powerful forces at work, hazard gentrification isn’t inevitable. Painter points to a few examples, including Joplin, Missouri; Coffey Park in California; and Seattle’s Duwamish Valley. After an EF5 tornado nearly leveled the town in 2011, local leaders mobilized quickly.</p><p>“They really self-organized effectively. They were very engaging with the community in the rebuilding process and prioritized not leaving anyone behind,” Painter says.</p><p>“Not every community is able to do that in that way, but it was something that really jumpstarted their recovery into a positive life.”</p><p>Painter notes that these engagement efforts helped preserve community bonds and gave residents a sense of ownership over the recovery.</p><p>“There seems to be much more cohesion and democratization when it comes to rebuilding like that,” she says. “The idea is that you need to bring communities together and let them share their voices. It’s so important.”</p><p><strong>What needs to change</strong></p><p>The question going forward, Painter posits, is whether policymakers will make bold choices to prevent displacement before the next hazard strikes.</p><p>“You can’t be prioritizing the stuff you’ve been prioritizing. If in the past it was something like economic development at the harm of lower-income and marginalized residents, that can’t be the way you go forward,” she says.</p><p>In other words, more equitable recovery efforts must start with a cultural shift in how communities allocate resources. New policies promoting rent control, expanded insurance and better disaster assistance for renters can all help lower the burden in the wake of a hazard.</p><p>“People need to understand the idea of sacrifice for their neighbors,” she says.</p><p> Boulder’s Natural Hazards Center is working to bridge the gap between research and real-world solutions.</p><p>“We aren’t just a research apparatus,” Painter says. “We’re also a connecting body. It’s important that we as researchers connect with policymakers and decision makers and are solution oriented.”</p><p>As climate change fuels more frequent and intense natural events, hazard gentrification will become more common. Naming the problem is just a first step, but also a necessary one. From there, Painter hopes society collectively adopts an action mindset.</p><p><span>“We need to find ways to be equitable and to provide for and support our communities, and to have plans for if there’s devastation, too. Academics are really good at identifying problems. She is also an associate professor with the University of Colorado Boulder&nbsp;</span><a href="/envs/" rel="nofollow"><span>Department of Environmental Studies</span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span>Carrico and her co-authors conducted five surveys of Americans between August 2023 and March of this year about their willingness to embrace 30 actions that would reduce greenhouse emissions. Purchasing electric vehicles (EVs) was the most polarizing item among those actions, with positive intentions recorded for liberals and negative intentions among conservatives.</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-09/Amanda%20Carrico.jpg?itok=bqfQHFu7" width="1500" height="1656" alt="portrait of Amanda Carrico"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span> Boulder scholar Amanda Carrico is an environmental psychologist whose research focus is on understanding people’s behaviors, attitudes and perceptions related to the environment.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span>However, in the past three surveys (May 2024, July 2024 and March), liberals have pumped the brakes regarding their intentions to buy Teslas—and that decline is associated with Musk’s relatively recent embrace of rightwing politics, Carrico says.</span></p><p><span>“We definitely find that overall intentions to purchase Tesla seems to decrease over time, so there seems to be an intensification of rejection of Teslas among liberals as Musk’s conservative persona emerged,” she says. That’s particularly significant given that liberals are the demographic group most inclined to purchase electric vehicles, she adds.</span></p><div class="ucb-box ucb-box-title-hidden ucb-box-alignment-left ucb-box-style-fill ucb-box-theme-lightgray"><div class="ucb-box-inner"><div class="ucb-box-title">&nbsp;</div><div class="ucb-box-content"><p class="lead"><a href="/today/2025/09/11/end-ev-tax-credits-experts-take-whats-stake" data-entity-type="external" rel="nofollow"><strong>What's at stake when EV tax credits end Sept. 30?</strong></a> &nbsp;<i class="fa-solid fa-plug-circle-bolt">&nbsp;</i></p></div></div></div><p><span>“At the same time, conservatives have been pretty predictable across the entirety of the surveys: They just aren’t interested in EVs,” Carrico says. “As Elon Musk was shifting to the right, our initial theory was: Maybe we’ll see conservatives become more interested in EVs, because you’ve got this now conservative figure in the industry who is excited about EVs because of their benefit to the environment. We thought we might be on the precipice of EVs becoming a less polarized issue. However, that has not turned out to be true.”</span></p><p><span>To support their research on Musk’s impact on the Tesla brand, Carrico and her co-authors also point to a series of Morning Consult polls showing a steady decline in self-reported willingness to buy a Tesla among Democrats since 2023. Separately, a Data for Progress poll found two-thirds of Democrats and half of Independents reported that Musk had made them less likely to buy a Tesla.</span></p><p><span>Recently, Carrico spoke with </span><em><span>Colorado Arts and Sciences Magazine</span></em><span> regarding the findings and implications of the research paper. Her responses have been lightly edited for grammar and clarity and condensed for space.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: Your team conducted five surveys between November 2023 and March of this year. Was it always the plan to ask specifically about Musk and Teslas, or did that come later?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Carrico: </strong>The idea came later, so it was opportunistic. It was interesting to us to see from the beginning that EVs were among the most polarizing action items, so we asked ourselves in 2024 if we should modify the question from EVs generally to Teslas.</span></p><p><span>There were two motivations for that. One was: How are people’s opinions shifting in response to this emergent political shift (by Musk)? The second was: We felt like we needed more information about people’s opinions about EVs generally versus Teslas, so some respondents were asked about EVs and some were asked about Tesla specifically, and that’s where you could see some delineation between those two categories.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: If Musk’s embrace of rightwing politics cost him the support of liberals without picking up notable support from conservatives, did he basically drive Tesla sales into a proverbial ditch?</strong></span></em></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-09/Tesla%20highway.jpg?itok=Yb5hQ3yn" width="1500" height="1052" alt="dark blue Tesla sedan driving on multi-lane road"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span>"We thought we might be on the precipice of EVs becoming a less polarized issue. A lot of his businesses are interconnected, and a lot of the technologies are interconnected.</span></p><p><span>But just purely looking at the impact of his political persona in relation to consumer interests in purchasing Teslas, and also the market data about purchasing Teslas, it does seem very clear that there is a decline in consumer interest in Teslas. Of course, business leaders and public figures make value judgments all the time, just like we all do. We don’t know if this decision (by Musk) was driven by economics or other factors. …</span></p><p><span>I personally would stop short of making a judgment about whether that was a smart decision or an unwise one, but you can certainly see that relationship (Musk’s embrace of a conservative persona and a declining interest among liberals to buy Teslas) play out in our data and the market data that we were able to acquire during the project.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: Do you have thoughts as to whether Tesla could regain support, particularly support from liberals, if Musk either stepped away from his company or perhaps walked back some of his rightwing views?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Carrico: </strong>I think there are some insights we could look to, to make an educated hypothesis on what might happen there. I will say, I think once something becomes politically polarized, like becoming aligned with a political identity, it’s very hard to undo that. Politics are very sticky, so it becomes hard to shed that.</span></p><p><span>With consumer behavior, we have seen a lot of companies recover from these kinds of things. For example, Budweiser being boycotted several years ago in response to their alliance with a transgender influencer. That was different, though, because Budweiser wasn’t entering into the political arena.</span></p><p><span>This is a very different thing, with Musk being the figurehead of a company. Tesla is unique in how tied Musk is to Tesla. For comparison, I don’t know how many people in America could tell you who is the leader of Nissan or Suncor or other companies, but Musk is uniquely visible in his role with Tesla.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: Do you have any thoughts as to how other EV manufacturers should respond to the survey findings when it comes to branding or messaging?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Carrico: </strong>Clearly, liberals want to explore EVs. I think it’s clear that it’s aligned with their identity. One interesting thing in this study that was very surprising to us is that the disinterest in EVs that started to grow over the course of the study wasn’t just isolated to Teslas. We started to see it bleed over into interest in purchasing EVs in general.</span></p><p><span>I wondered if that wasn’t so much a rejection of EVs as a disinterest in one of the leading vehicles in the EV market. Teslas were considered state-of-the-art in many respects. The charging infrastructure for Teslas feels quite superior to other alternatives, so it does feel like there’s a consumer demand that’s not being met by other alternatives," says Amanda Carrico, Boulder associate professor and department chair of environmental studies.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span>Of course, that’s easier said than done, but insofar as there are opportunities for other producers to fill this space—to offer purchasing opportunities that are not Tesla but that fulfill the same goals and amenities as Tesla offered—I think that’s a real opportunity, and I’m sure they are scrambling to take advantage of that.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: A number of media outlets have reported on the study’s findings. What kind of reaction has the paper been generating?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Carrico: </strong>It’s been very interesting because the reaction has depended heavily upon the political orientation of the news outlet, which is perhaps not surprising. If it was covered by a more liberal outlet—</span><em><span>Mother Jones,</span></em><span> for example—the main takeaway was, ‘Look at Elon Musk. What a fool he was, shooting himself in the foot.’</span></p><p><span>Then if you look on the right—it’s been covered by </span><em><span>Breitbart,</span></em><span> for example—the narrative has been, ‘Look at these liberals rejecting these products that solve the problem they care so much about,’ meaning climate change.</span></p><p><span>There’s been accurate depictions of the findings in the paper, but also it’s been interesting because anyone can take what they want out of the paper and spin it, or link it, to their political identity.</span></p><p><em><span><strong>Question: Do you think this is a topic you and your co-authors will revisit, perhaps to see how opinions on EVs in general, and Teslas in particular, evolve over time?</strong></span></em></p><p><span><strong>Carrico: </strong>To be honest, we have not talked about it yet, but I would not be surprised if that happens. Writing papers like this, there’s a lot of work to get one completed, and the review process can be long and tedious. But the team (of co-authors) is still meeting, and so I anticipate that within the next few months we’ll be revisiting things, deciding what we want to focus on next and trying to understand how polarization impacts a range of behaviors.</span></p><p><span>There is an aspect of this project that is trying to understand things people do agree on. Specifically, where is there less polarization? Because those areas are appealing targets for public policy, with the idea (that) we can make progress on the areas we agree on and wait for things we don’t agree on to see if there’s opportunities in the future.</span></p><p><span>I hope that this moment fades, so that we can move away from this rancor around EVs. I’m really hopeful about the potential of decarbonization and how that is linked with a changing of the vehicle fleet (from combustion engine to EV), so I still think there’s a lot of potential there, and I’m hopeful we will still see some renewed interest in this technology. Since a phase change in the early 2000s, the region has endured a <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41558-022-01290-z" rel="nofollow">dry spell of epic proportions</a>.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-08/Pedro%20DiNezio.jpg?itok=8LFEaJXO" width="1500" height="1905" alt="portrait of Pedro DiNezio"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"> Boulder scientist Pedro DiNezio, along with climate researchers around the world, <span>assert that human activity may be driving drought more intensely—and more directly—than previously understood.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>The PDO was thought to be a natural phenomenon, governed by unpredictable natural ocean and atmosphere fluctuations. But <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09368-2" rel="nofollow">new research</a> published in the journal Nature suggests that’s no longer the case.</p><p>Working with hundreds of climate model simulations, our team of atmosphere, earth and ocean scientists found that the PDO is now being strongly influenced by human factors and has been since the 1950s. It should have oscillated to a wetter phase by now, but instead it has been stuck. Our results suggest that drought could become the new normal for the region unless human-driven warming is halted.</p><p><strong>The science of a drying world</strong></p><p>For decades, scientists have relied on a basic physical principle to predict rainfall trends: <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/sixth-assessment-report-working-group-i/" rel="nofollow">Warmer air holds more moisture</a>. In a warming world, this means <a href="https://theconversation.com/the-water-cycle-is-intensifying-as-the-climate-warms-ipcc-report-warns-that-means-more-intense-storms-and-flooding-165590" rel="nofollow">wet areas are likely to get wetter</a>, while dry regions become drier. In dry areas, as temperatures rise, more moisture is pulled from soils and transported away from these arid regions, intensifying droughts.</p><p>While most climate models simulate this general pattern, they often <a href="https://doi.org/10.1175/JCLI-D-12-00282.1" rel="nofollow">underestimate its full extent</a>, particularly over land areas.</p><p>Yet countries are already experiencing drought emerging as one of the most immediate and severe consequences of climate change. Understanding what’s ahead is essential, to know how long these droughts will last and because severe droughts can have sweeping affects on ecosystems, economies and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/21/climate/drought-food-prices-coffee-wheat-beef.html" rel="nofollow">global food security</a>.</p><p><strong>Human fingerprints on megadroughts</strong></p><p>Simulating rainfall is one of the greatest challenges in climate science. It depends on a complex interplay between large-scale wind patterns and small-scale processes such as cloud formation.</p><p>Until recently, climate models have not offered a <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/figures/chapter-8/figure-8-14/" rel="nofollow">clear picture of how rainfall patterns</a> are likely to change in the near future as greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, power plants and industries continue to heat up the planet. The models can diverge sharply in where, when and how precipitation will change. Even forecasts that average the results of several models differ when it comes to changes in rainfall patterns.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-08/Pacific%20Decadal%20Oscillation%20graph.jpg?itok=CxsJcA9r" width="1500" height="1143" alt="graph showing Pacific Decadal Oscillation over time"> </div> </div></div><p>The techniques we deployed are helping to sharpen that picture <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09368-2" rel="nofollow">for North America</a> and <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09319-x" rel="nofollow">across the tropics</a>.</p><p>We looked back at the pattern of PDO phase changes over the past century using an exceptionally large ensemble of climate simulations. The massive number of simulations, more than 500, allowed us to isolate the human influences. This showed that the shifts in the PDO were driven by an interplay of increasing warming from greenhouse gas emissions and cooling from sun-blocking particles called aerosols that are associated with industrial pollution.</p><p>From the 1950s through the 1980s, we found that increasing <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/science-research/earth-science/climate-science/aerosols-small-particles-with-big-climate-effects/" rel="nofollow">aerosol emissions</a> from rapid industrialization following World War II drove a positive trend in the PDO, making the Southwest rainier and less parched.</p><p>After the 1980s, we found that the combination of a sharp rise in greenhouse gas emissions from industries, power plants and vehicles and a reduction in aerosols as countries <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20250106012650/https:/www.epa.gov/clean-air-act-overview/progress-cleaning-air-and-improving-peoples-health" rel="nofollow">cleaned up their air pollution</a> shifted the PDO into the negative, drought-generating trend that continues today.</p><p>This finding represents a paradigm shift in our scientific understanding of the PDO and a warning for the future. The current negative phase can no longer be seen as just a roll of the climate dice<span>—</span>it has been loaded by humans.</p><p>Our conclusion that global warming can drive the PDO into its negative, drought-inducing phase is also supported by <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41561-025-01726-z" rel="nofollow">geological records of past megadroughts</a>. Around 6,000 years ago, during a period of high temperatures, evidence shows the emergence of a similar temperature pattern in the North Pacific and widespread drought across the Southwest.</p><p><strong>Tropical drought risks underestimated</strong></p><p>The past is also providing clues to future rainfall changes in the tropics and the risk of droughts in locations such as the Amazon.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-08/Western%20reservoirs%20water%20level%20graph.jpg?itok=8kRKSDpS" width="1500" height="1244" alt="graph showing water decline over time in western reservoirs"> </div> </div></div><p>One particularly instructive example comes from approximately 17,000 years ago. Geological evidence shows that there was a period of widespread rainfall shifts across the tropics coinciding with a major slowdown of ocean currents in the Atlantic.</p><p>These ocean currents, which play a crucial role in regulating global climate, naturally weakened or partially collapsed then, and they are expected to slow further this century at the current pace of global warming.</p><p>A recent study of that period, using computer models to analyze geologic evidence of earth’s climate history, found <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-025-09319-x" rel="nofollow">much stronger drying</a> in the Amazon basin than previously understood. It also shows similar patterns of aridification in Central America, West Africa and Indonesia.</p><p>The results suggest that rainfall could decline precipitously again. Even a modest slowdown of a major Atlantic Ocean current could dry out rainforests, threaten vulnerable ecosystems and upend livelihoods across the tropics.</p><p><strong>What comes next</strong></p><p>Drought is a growing problem, increasingly driven by human influence. Confronting it will require <a href="https://theconversation.com/as-the-colorado-river-slowly-dries-up-states-angle-for-influence-over-future-water-rights-254132" rel="nofollow">rethinking water management</a>, agricultural policy and adaptation strategies. Doing that well depends on predicting drought with far greater confidence.</p><p>Climate research shows that better predictions are possible by using computer models in new ways and rigorously validating their performance against evidence from past climate shifts. (Photo: Patrick Campbell/ Boulder)</p> </span> </div></div><p>Professor Jean-Claude Burgelman, director of the Frontiers Planet Prize, said the planet faces immense threats that require bold, transformative solutions rooted in evidence and validated by science.</p><p>“Innovative yet scalable solutions are the only way for us to ensure healthy lives on a healthy planet,” Burgelman said. “By spotlighting the most groundbreaking research, we are helping scientists bring their work to the international stage and provide the scientific consensus needed to guide our actions and policies.”</p><p>Mehrabi, who leads the&nbsp;<a href="https://betterplanetlab.com/" rel="nofollow">Better Planet Laboratory</a>, was recognized, alongside his co-authors, for an article published last year in the journal&nbsp;<em>Science</em>&nbsp;titled “<a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adj1914" rel="nofollow">Joint environmental and social benefits from diversified agriculture</a>.”</p><p>Laura Vang Rasmussen of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and Ingo Grass of the University of Hohenheim in Germany were lead authors of the paper, which had 58 co-authors. Claire Kremen of the University of British Columbia was a senior author and co-principal investigator on the study.</p><p>The researchers found that diversifying crops and animals and improving habitat, soil and water conservation on individual farms can improve biodiversity while improving or, at a minimum, not coming at a cost to yields. Additionally, diversified farming can yield social benefits and improve food security—showing improved food access or a reduced number of hungry months, for example, particularly in smallholder systems.</p><p>The more diversification measures farms employed, the more benefits accrued, researchers observed. Essentially, the team found evidence to move toward agriculture that more closely reflects natural systems.</p><p>“If you look at how ecosystems operate, it’s not just plants growing alone. It’s not just animals or soil,” Mehrabi said last year. “It’s all of these things working together.”</p><p>Using data from 2,655 farms across 11 countries and covering five continents, the researchers combined qualitative methods and statistical models to&nbsp;analyze 24 different datasets. Each dataset studied farm sites with varying levels of diversification, including farms without any diversification practices. This allowed the team to assess the effects of applying more diversification strategies.</p><p>Diversified farming differs from the dominant model of agriculture: growing single crops or one animal on large tracts of land. That efficient, “monoculture” style of farming is a hallmark of agriculture after the Green Revolution, which reduced global famine by focusing on high-yield crops that rely on fertilizers and pesticides.</p><p>“The Green Revolution did many, many great things, but it came with a lot of costs,” Mehrabi says, noting that synthetic fertilizers and pesticides harm the environment.</p><p>Also, to increase labor productivity, large farms rely on mechanization, which tends to “replace people with machines.”</p><p>“So, the idea of trying to engineer nature into our agricultural systems is somewhat antithetical to the whole way we think about agricultural development,” Mehrabi says.</p><p>Making a case for a different way of doing agriculture is one thing. Implementing it on a widespread basis is something else. It’s all of these things working together,” says Zia Mehrabi.</p> </span> </div></div><p>“Our work challenges that idea, but it’s a bit of a David-and-Goliath situation,” he adds. “We have the stone, but it hasn’t yet landed.”</p><p>But it’s necessary to confront Goliath, Mehrabi contends, noting that agriculture affects all the things people care about environmentally, including climate change, water security, biodiversity, pollution, land use and habitat destruction.</p><p>A third of the Earth’s land is used for agriculture, and about a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions stem from agriculture, he notes. Climate change has reduced agricultural yields by as much as 5% to 10% in the last four decades, research has shown.</p><p>“If we want to do something about environmental issues, agriculture is one of the big buckets that we need to really, really start in.”</p><p>Separate from the research published in&nbsp;<em>Science</em>, Mehrabi has done&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41893-023-01110-y" rel="nofollow">modeling of the future state of agriculture globally</a>if the world continues business-as-usual farming. He found that in the next century, the number of farms is likely to be cut in half and the average size of farms would likely double.</p><p>Given that, along with what scientists know about the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41893-021-00699-2" rel="nofollow">loss of natural ecosystems as farm sizes increase</a>, “the future looks a little bit bleak,” Mehrabi says. But this new research shows it could be different.</p><p>Though he does not suggest that all farms must be small farms, he does advise that agriculture strive to diversify systems that have been “massively depleted and massively simplified.”</p><p> the Frontiers Planet Prize, Mehrabi says he and his team are gratified to be recognized as one of three international champions. Additionally, he underscores the importance of the Frontiers Research Foundation’s financial commitment to this kind of research, calling it a “signal” to other funding entities that might follow suit.</p><p>“We need to really think about innovation in agriculture,” Mehrabi said. “We all need food to eat. We really need to innovate, and we should put money behind that. It’s worth it.”</p><p>Launched by the Frontiers Research Foundation on Earth Day 2022, the prize encourages universities worldwide to nominate their top three scientists working on understanding and putting forward pathways to stay within the safe operating space of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/planetary-boundaries.html" rel="nofollow">nine planetary boundaries</a>&nbsp;that are outlined by the Stockholm Resilience Center.</p><p>These nominations are then vetted at the national level, and the top scientists face an independent jury of 100—a group of renowned sustainability and planetary health experts chaired by Professor Johan Rockström—who vote for the National and International Champions.</p><p><em>Read a guest opinion by Zia Mehrabi and co-authors&nbsp;</em><a href="/asmagazine/2025/04/21/how-we-can-why-we-must-transform-food-systems" rel="nofollow"><em>at this link</em></a><em>. In response to the exclusion of student voices, a group of graduate students began work to give students a seat at the table and engage the undergraduate community in ’s climate-planning work. First, the group launched a petition calling for student participation in the drafting of the CAP. Then the group helped pass a resolution through student government to grant student seats on the committee implementing the CAP in the future.&nbsp;</p><p>“Students have always been key drivers of sustainability and climate action on campuses across the U.S., including at Boulder,” the team says. “As young people, our futures are jeopardized by the climate crisis, so we have a collective stake in rapidly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.”</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-05/Sustainability%20class.jpg?itok=Uz8FNx56" width="1500" height="1125" alt="graduate students and faculty who co-create climate action planning course"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">The graduate students and faculty who <span>co-designed and now teach an undergraduate course on climate-action planning include (left to right) Brigid Mark, Nadav Orian Peer, Jonah Shaw, Sean Benjamin, Mariah Bowman and Sara Fleming.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>But the group didn’t stop there. Fueled by a shared passion for climate mitigation and the belief that students should help shape the university’s future, the group of five graduate students from four different departments spent hundreds of hours co-designing and now teaching an undergraduate course on climate-action planning.</p><p>The course gives undergrads hands-on experience with ’s campus emissions data, collaboration opportunities with university stakeholders and a chance to develop sustainability strategies that could be implemented campuswide.</p><p>Their efforts recently earned the group Boulder’s 2025 Campus Sustainability Award for Student Leadership. The group also won a $5,000 scholarship from the <a href="https://zontafoothills.org/" rel="nofollow">women-led nonprofit Zonta Foothills Foundation</a>, in recognition for their groundbreaking work in climate education and advocacy. The School of Engineering, following advocacy from generous faculty members David Paradis and Carol Cogswell, was also gracious enough to provide funding for their work.</p><p><strong>A more engaging climate classroom</strong></p><p>The group of graduate instructors brings an interdisciplinary approach and myriad perspectives to the classroom.&nbsp;</p><p>The teaching team includes <a href="/law/2024/03/20/mariah-bowman-25-named-2024-2025-colorado-law-wyss-scholar" rel="nofollow">Mariah Bowman</a> (law), <a href="/geography/sara-fleming" rel="nofollow">Sara Fleming</a> (geography), <a href="/ecenter/meet-our-staff/cusg-environmental-board/sean-benjamin" rel="nofollow">Sean Benjamin</a> (mechanical engineering), <a href="/sociology/brigid-mark" rel="nofollow">Brigid Mark</a> (sociology) and <a href="/atoc/jonah-shaw-hehimhis" rel="nofollow">Jonah Shaw</a> (atmospheric and oceanic sciences). Each has worked to tackle climate-related issues through the lens of their expertise, from Indigenous environmental justice to climate-change modeling.</p><p>The team’s diverse makeup is reflected in the design of their course and has fueled their success. But the road to this point hasn’t been easy.</p><p>“This is a labor of love,” the team says. “We are doing this because we care. Funding and the time required have been challenges.”</p><p>Before the course launched, each graduate instructor spent many unpaid hours creating the syllabus, listing the course and building campus partnerships to access emissions data. During the semester, they spend many hours a week on teaching responsibilities that come in addition to their regular duties.</p><p>Financial support from the School of Engineering and the Zonta Foothills award has helped, but long term, the team hopes to see the course institutionalized and funded.</p><p>The team says, “Institutionalizing the course so that it runs each year<span>&nbsp;</span>and guaranteeing funding for instructors and teaching assistants would ensure the longevity and sustainability of this course. From there, they split into teams to tackle different emissions categories on campus: commuting, waste, business travel and student/parent flights.</p><p>“Students work in four teams, each focused on a different category of campus emissions. They’re developing strategies to reduce emissions for their category, adding depth and student perspective to the high-level strategy suggestions in the CAP,” the instructors say.</p><p>Guest speakers, including administrators and national experts, round out the curriculum. Students have heard from Stanford University’s sustainability team and Boulder faculty like Professor Karen Bailey (environmental studies) and Professor Nadav Orian Peer (law). They also meet with stakeholders across campus to refine their proposals.</p><p>The team believes this approach is the best way to facilitate opportunities to create actionable, equity-centered climate strategies grounded in real data.</p><p>“Involving students in climate initiatives enables them to apply knowledge about climate change to their own institution, experience they will carry to become leaders in climate action in their future workplaces and communities,” says Mark.</p><p>The results are already visible on campus.</p><p>One student team is working with ’s transportation specialist to revise the campus commuting survey. Another is working on a survey for better tracking of student and parent air travel. Others are collaborating with dining services and facilities to reduce waste and consulting with faculty to provide more accurate emissions calculations of flights taken by faculty and staff.</p><p>“Students often learn about the gravity of climate change without learning about solutions, which can be quite depressing,” says Mark.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-05/teaching.jpg?itok=GkMkf6iI" width="1500" height="1125" alt="Students in Boulder classroom"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">An interdisciplinary team of graduate students teaches the climate-action planning course for undergraduate students.</p> </span> </div></div><p>“Involving students in climate-action planning and implementation can combat feelings of hopelessness and enable participation in creating real change.”</p><p><strong>Impact on both sides</strong></p><p>This student-led course has already sparked engagement on both sides of the classroom. One undergraduate took the initiative to launch a campus club to raise awareness about the CAP. Others hope to join implementation committees or pursue careers in sustainability.</p><p>“To me, this demonstrates that students are hungry for interdisciplinary courses that enable them to apply their skills and creativity to issues on campus and engage with solutions to the climate crisis,” Fleming says.</p><p>For Bowman, the most rewarding part of the experience is the students themselves. “They are passionate, knowledgeable, interested, hardworking and fun to be around! It has been deeply meaningful to get to train them on something I care so much about, and have them care about it in return,” she says.</p><p>And for Fleming, designing and teaching the course has also given her much.
