This presentation explores how people build a sense of place and community in the development zones and corridors that have become focal sites of Chinese investment in Southeast Asia.

It develops a concept of ‘new hinterlands’ to describe and analyse infrastructure spaces like Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). Here, infrastructural reconfigurations of space produce a new kind of hinterland, one where life is often suspended somewhere between the rural and urban, between the agricultural and industrial, and between the past and the future.

In the new hinterlands, livelihoods subsist and ‘make do’ with the uncertain and temporary opportunities eked out at the margins of global supply chains. The EEC’s geography of ambition is a landscape caught in a limbo between connectivity and abandonment, development and dispossession.

Broadly, this presentation asks: within these spaces meant to facilitate movement, how do connective infrastructures produce interstitial and contingent landscapes of settling? How do people ‘make do’ and forge places of belonging, identity, and care in a space that has been designed to literally pass them by?

Tim Oakes is Professor of Geography at the University of Colorado Boulder. From 2012 to 2023 he was Director of the Colorado Center for Asian Studies, and from 2018 to 2023 he was Project Director of China Made, an international research collective focusing on China’s infrastructure-driven model of export development, funded by The Henry Luce Foundation.

He has published extensively on the cultural and political effects of rural and urban development in China, cultural governance, tourism and heritage development, and most recently, infrastructural urbanism. Recent visiting faculty positions have included the National University of Singapore, University of Oslo, University of Hong Kong, Wageningen University, and Guizhou Minzu University. His current book project, forthcoming 2026, is Living in Nuclear Asia: Sociotechnical Perspectives on Nuclear Power Development, Risk, and Vulnerability (University of Toronto).

The Blakemore Foundation is now accepting applications for our fellowships for an academic year of full-time advanced language study at approved language programs in Asia during the 2026/2027 academic year. All fellowships provide full tuition and a stipend for living, travel and study expenses. We would appreciate your sharing this opportunity with your students and other potential applicants.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded to graduating seniors, college graduates, graduate students and young/mid-career professionals for advanced study of Chinese (in Taiwan), Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, or Vietnamese in Asia. Study of Chinese in Beijing is available as a Blakemore Fellowship. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States, have completed (at minimum) the third year of study of the Asian language, and are ready to advance to professional fluency.

Blakemore Kingfisher Art History Language Fellowships will be awarded for study of Chinese or Korean in East Asia. These grants are open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada, and to foreign nationals studying in colleges or universities in the United States or Canada, who have a well-demonstrated intent to study the pre-twentieth century history of Chinese or Korean art at the doctoral level. Applicants must have received a bachelor's degree by the start of a grant and have completed (at minimum) two years of classroom study of the language in rigorous college-level language programs.

Who should apply? The Blakemore Foundation is looking for exceptional candidates who will make significant contributions to their career field. The ideal candidate is someone with stellar grades, outstanding recommendations, and a demonstrated commitment to the Asian country and language. Beyond commitment, we are looking for a mature purpose: a career path that will require and benefit from fluency in that Asian language throughout that individual's life.

The Pulse of the Earth offers an innovative account of the intersections between geology, colonial history, and spiritual cosmologies. Bobbette reframes Java as a pivotal site for the development of geological knowledge, challenging Western-centric narratives of scientific history. Through attention to Javanese spiritual practices and their influence on geological thought, he shows how volcanology both shaped and was shaped by local cosmologies.

This work contributes significantly to the environmental humanities and political geology, offering timely insights into how climate crises have been addressed in the past and present.

Immigration to the US has been a hot button issue over the last few decades. Since January 2025 under the second Trump administration, Homeland Security has deployed ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and CBP (Custom and Border Protection) officers who have detained and deported people who are extra legal (people without proper documentation to remain in the US), visa holders, and green card holders. This panel will talk about the recent uptick in aggressive and violent detentions and deportations, which have even swept up US citizens. How can we talk about immigration and a path to citizenship during a time when ICE and CBP are racially targeting those they believe do not “look” like they belong in the US?

Dr. Min Jeonghun is a Professor in the Department of American Studies at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA). He is interested in the US-China strategic competition, ROK-US relations, North Korea-US relations, and American Politics. Before joining the KNDA, he taught Political Science and International Relations at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma, US. After joining the KNDA, he has published policy papers on the diplomatic and security situations on the Korean Peninsula and East Asia and articles in academic journals. He is a policy adviser to the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Unification of the Republic of Korea. Dr. MIN received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Georgia.

The Tibetan & Himalayan Cultural Festival in Longmont brings together food, film, photography, and dance.

Join us at 2pm on Saturday, September 20th at the Longmont Museum & Cultural Center for a special screening of Honey Giver Among the Dogs (Monmo Tashi Kyidren), directed by Dechen Roder. �� the film: In remote Bhutan, an undercover detective investigates the case of a missing Buddhist nun and falls into a risky alliance with his only suspect - an alluring woman known as the village “demoness.”

Film starts at 2:15pm. There will be light refreshments, chai and momos (dumplings), before the film begins and time for Q&A after the film with Professors Padma ‘tsho (Southwest Minzu University) and Holly Gayley (�� Boulder). There is a special photo and woodcut exhibit to enjoy in conjunction with the film, and the chance to try out Tibetan circle dance to conclude the festival.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the global language industry, redefining translation, interpretation, and accessibility. For higher education — especially programs in languages, business, and international affairs — the question is clear: how do we prepare students to thrive in professions that AI is already reshaping?

In this presentation, David Utrilla will share insights from 30 years as Founder and CEO of U.S. Translation Company and showcase live demonstrations of cutting-edge AI tools currently being used across the industry. David Utrilla studied international business and economics in Peru and in the USA. In 1995, he founded U.S. Translation Company and currently serves as its CEO. His company has been recognized with multiple awards, including Utah’s Best of State, listed six times in the Inc. 5000 for the fastest-growing companies in America, Mountain West Capital Network’s top 100 fastest-growing companies in Utah, and the SBA’s Small Businessperson of the Year.

He has completed executive programs at Harvard Business School, Stanford University, and the University of Washington, and has spoken at major industry conferences, including LOCWorld, GALA, and ALC. David has received multiple awards from universities, Chambers of Commerce, and the State of Utah for his entrepreneurial success and community contributions. He serves on fifteen boards of directors across various sectors, including business, finance, education, nonprofits, and international organizations. In 2009, he was appointed by the President of Peru as the Honorary Consul of Peru in Utah, a position he held until December 2024.
