Bio
Sarah is a PhD Candidate in the University of Colorado Boulder Department of Environmental Studies. ÌýHer dissertation research focuses on identifying important at-sea areas for seabirds and pinnipeds in the Southern Ocean, examining oceanographic drivers of suitable foraging habitat, and modeling management scenarios to mitigate bycatch of albatross in fisheries. She has worked previously on many other taxa and ecosystems, from cod and bluefin tuna in the Gulf of Maine to sharks, sea turtles, and reef fish in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific.Ìý
Sarah'sÌýcurrent research uses telemetry, remote sensing, and observational survey data to examine mobile marine predator movement and habitat use. Her work also leverages demographic and population monitoring data to link spatial dynamics to population trajectories and to identify conservation management priorities. In addition to her quantitative ecology work, Sarah also studies how science is used to inform conservation policy and guide decision-making. She is particularly interested in working to manage the impact of fisheries and climate change on threatened species. Check out her publications Ìý& .
Before starting her PhD, Sarah has worked as a data analyst with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Conservation Research Department, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, and the Massachusetts Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit, as a field technician and scientific diver with the National Park Service in St. Croix, USVI, and as an environmental educator and guide in the Bahamas. Originally from Charlottesville, Virginia, in her free time you can find Sarah outside: hiking, camping, skiing, diving, and reading in her hammock; or working on pen and ink, graphite, and digital drawings inspired by her research and outdoor adventures.Ìý
