Fencing Team Makes Strong Debut at SWIFA Invitational

San Marcos, Texas — In their first-ever time traveling for competition, the Fencing Club stepped onto the piste at the SWIFA Invitational hosted by Texas State University on November 8–9 and delivered a performance that turned heads. Facing 10 other programs, the team finished 5th overall, a promising start for a squad still finding its footing.

The highlight of the weekend came from the Epee squad, which battled its way to an impressive 2nd place finish out of 18 entries. Their consistency and grit set the tone for the team’s debut. While the foil and sabre squads landed in the middle of the pack, the experience proved invaluable for the entire roster.

“Our cohesion and ability to self-coach were huge strengths,” said one team member. “We learned a lot about the competition format, and now we know what to expect next time.”

The event wasn’t without its challenges. The unfamiliar format initially threw the team off, but they adapted quickly and showed resilience. Beyond the bouts, the trip marked a milestone: the team’s first travel experience together, creating memories that will last well beyond the season.

With lessons learned and confidence gained, the Fencing Club is already looking ahead. If their debut is any indication, this team is poised to become a serious contender in future tournaments.
