Faculty Fellow
OverviewÌý
Ìý
There are two types of Faculty Fellow job codes available to the ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder campus: FF codes are secondary roles aligned with primary faculty roles, and 1439 is for primary position hires.
FF codes define Faculty Fellows as:
“For recognition of additional work such as course development, external fellowships paid through the university, or other assignments or duties that are not summer teaching, summer research or course overload. This job code is limited for use as an additional appointment for faculty members with a primary appointment (or combination of appointments). The primary appointment(s) must be active, regular (permanent) with at least 20 Standard Hours.â€
The position is typically temporary, associated with a primary faculty appointment, and can encompass a variety of responsibilities that fall outside the main purview of faculty’s regular positions (e.g., teaching, research, traditional service and leadership in the department/unit).
The stand-alone 1439 code does not have a system-level definition currently and is instead defined by the Boulder Campus. Full-time Faculty Fellows are:
“For appointing full-time (50% FTE or more) professionals conducting academic affairs work who do not hold a primary faculty appointment with the University of Colorado Boulder. These professionals support academic programs and clinics in roles that fall outside of teaching and research, such as providing mentorship to a course where they are not the instructor of record, leading a time-limited initiative, or supporting a non-medical clinic’s work.â€
GuidelinesÌý
Common faculty fellow appointments include work for course development, approved administrative service in a unit beyond the scope of existing associate chairs/directors, and external fellowships paid through the university. Faculty fellow appointments are time limited, and typically expire within 1 semester to 2 academic years from their start date. Faculty fellow positions are renewable.ÌýÌý
Faculty fellow appointments should not be used for additional teaching or additional research work. For those types of work, existing additional job titles and processes should be used.ÌýÌý
As of Spring 2025, faculty members who previously held faculty fellow appointments that functioned like an endowed appointment (i.e., the faculty fellow position is an honor and has no explicit administrative responsibilities or additional work assignments the faculty member must complete) must be transitioned to Endowed Chair or Endowed Professor positions upon the conclusion of their current faculty fellow contract, if the honorary position is to continue.ÌýÌý
