Encouraging Students to Go Abroad
¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder Education AbroadÌýoffers hundreds of programs in nearly 70 countries. Programs exist for all majors, and provide formats and opportunities that are as diverse as the student body that we serve. Education abroad programs come in various forms including, but not limited to, study abroad programs, student exchanges, short-term faculty-led programs, internships, and research opportunities.
Thanks for your support of Education Abroad programs and your students' participation on them. Many students say that they did not think about going abroad until a faculty member mentioned it.
Students are encouraged to review theÌýÌýfor programs & courses that will help them complete their degree requirements and connect with an Education Abroad advisor to discuss programs that can give them opportunities to explore their major from a global perspective. If you are interested in further integrating the coursework completed abroad into the ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä degree, contact Michal Greenberg atÌýmichal.greenberg@colorado.edu.
Financial support for graduate work abroad:
- TheÌý¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Graduate School websiteÌýhas the most comprehensive listing of possible funding opportunities (including several focused on study/research abroad).
- TheÌýÌýawards grantsÌýfor graduate study or research abroad. Contact Deborah VilesÌý(topscholarships@colorado.edu) at theÌýTop Scholarship Office for more information
Programs & partnership opportunities:
- Education Abroad has a limited number ofÌýopportunities abroad for graduate students. More commonlyÌýgraduate students organize their own study/research abroad. Each graduate student is so different in terms of interests/focus that it is very difficult to offer organized programs.
- For faculty and staff considering developing new partnerships abroad involving graduate students,Ìýthere are certain restrictions or limitations to keep in mind.
- Linguistic ability:ÌýInternational fellowships and grants inevitably require the recipient to have an adequate command of the host country language. If a department hopes to establish a continuing exchange of graduate students with a country where the native language is not English, the department might want to consider a rigorous international language requirement for its own program.
- Credit limitations: There areÌýlimitations on the number of credit hours from another institution that can be counted toward a graduate degree at ¶¶ÒõÂÃÐÐÉä Boulder. Most graduates who go abroad for academic work have already completed necessary course work and wish to go abroad to do thesis or dissertation research.
